Men’s Health Program Series: (Men Care Too)

Real Men’s Health is showcasing excellence in men’s health programs through our Men’s Health Program Series.

In each article, we will ask 5 questions of a featured program organiser & gain insight into what they do and their thoughts on men’s health today.

In this article, we speak with Mr Greg Smith, from Men Care Too.

Q1: Could you please describe your role in the organisation?

Volunteer Co-Ordinator at Men Care Too along with roles as a Mr Perfect BBQ host, The Man Walk Manbassador and an R U OK? Community Ambassador.

Q2: Could you please describe what your organisation does?

Men Care Too aims to improve recognition and encourage appropriate supports for the almost 1 million Australian men providing informal care and support to a family member or friend who is unwell.

Q3: What are the biggest changes you have observed within the men’s health space over the past 5-years?

An increase in structured and informal opportunities for men to connect, share and learn with each other.  I often hear it said that ‘men don’t talk’ or are ‘hard to reach’ but we know that by creating a secure space and allowing time to engage, men are able to have meaningful conversations.

Q4: If hypothetically, the Government offered you an unrestricted $1M grant tomorrow, what one project would you spend it all on?

Over many years studying health and community services, I have found very little content or understanding dedicated to working with men.  I would like to see this topic explored in education settings so that future generations of health and social workers can develop an effective understanding of how to better support men.

Q5: And lastly, do you have a favourite sports team, when & why did you start supporting them?

As a young boy with a love of dogs I was drawn to the Canterbury Bankstown Bulldogs in the NRL.  Early on, my favourite player was Terry Lamb.  His work rate and competitive attitude on game day made him someone I looked up to.

Thank you for sharing with Real Men’s Health
